[M. B. The result of her game was arbitrarily reversed by the All-Union Board of Referees in Moscow, thereby forfeiting her title and ending up in 3rd place. She regained the Soviet women‘s crown in 1984. Ajeeb created by Hooper & exhibited at Royal Polytechnical Institute. E [BW] = 1868

Ajeeb destroyed by fire at Coney Island. E [BW] = 1929.03.15

Ajeeb E The name of the chess automation built by Charles Hopper, a Bristol cabinet-maker, in 1865. The life-size Indian figure was operated by several chess and checker masters. One opponent shot at Ajeeb after losing a game, wounding the operator. One of the operators of Ajeeb was chess and checker master Constant Ferdinand Burille. During his years as operator, he played over 900 games of chess and only lost 3 games. He never lost a single checker game. Pillsbury was its hidden operator from 1898 to 1904. When Ajeeb was on display in New York at the Eden Musee, it played checkers for a dime and chess for a quarter. Opponents included Theodore Roosevelt, Houdini, Admiral Dewey, O. Henry and Sarah Bernhardt. Ajeeb was 10 feet high. Ajeeb was first exhibited at the Royal Polytechnical Institute in London in 1868. It was lodged at the Crystal Palace between 1868 and 1876 and then went to the Royal Aquarium at Westminster until 1877. It was then taken to Berlin where over 100,000 saw it in three months. It came to New York in 1885. It was destroyed by fire at Coney Island in 1929. Charles Barker, US checkers champion, also worked Ajeeb, never losing a single game. ® Ajeeb, Ajib E [CT]

Alekhine Defense - Brooklyn Variation E B02 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Ng8. The Brooklyn Defense, or ® Retreat Variation, is a radical twist on Alekhine‘s plan. There is still the hypermodern goal of encouraging the opponent to overextend, but in this case Black tucks the knight away at g8, instead of moving it to d5 where it is vulnerable to attack by White‘s pawns. 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3. 4.f4 Nh6 5.Nf3 g6 6.Bd3 Bg7 7.0-0 was the continuation of Young - Benjamin, Manhattan Chess Club (rapid) 1985, and here Black shouldhave castled, where White has only a small advantage. 4.exd6 is not an effective plan here, and all three recaptures are possible. [UO] ® Aljechin-Verteidigung - Brooklyn-Variante B02

Alekhine Defense - Krejcik Variation E B02 1.e4 Nf6 2.Bc4. The Krejcik Variation is a groggy opening, with only one stumbling idea behind the sacrifice of the e-pawn. 2...Nxe4 3.Bxf7+ Otherwise there is nothing at all to show for the material. 3...Kxf7 4.Qh5+ Kg8. 4...g6 5.Qd5+ e6 6.Qxe4 Bg7 is the other form of defense, for example7.Nf3 Rf8 8.d4 d5 9.Qd3 Nc6 10.Nc3 [UO] ® Aljechin-Verteidigung - Krejcik-Variante B02

Alekhine Defense - Mokele Mbembe E B02 1.e4 Nf6; 2.e5 Ne4 The Mokele Mbembe has been studied intensively by German theoretician Stefan Bücker, who has written extensively in defense of his pet opening. He has given it the strange name Mokele Mbembe, which refers to an African beast which is reported to be powerful enough to stop the flow of rivers. The dismissal of the opening with; 3.d4 in my book with Joel Benjamin was premature, as we had not given sufficient attention to a defense which Bücker had already worked out but which was not in our possession in 1986. There is no room here to go into even a superficial examination of the many lines he analyzes, but here is my latest thinking on a good counter by White. 3...f6 This is the move that Bücker touts as the salvation of Black‘s position. 4.Bd3.; 4.Qh5+ g6; 5.Qe2 d5; 6.f3 Ng5; 7.exf6 Ne6 is an idea from the unorthodox Finn, Kari Heinola, described as a critical variation by Bücker. I don‘t think that this shuffling by the queen helps, and after; 8.f7+ Kxf7; 9.c3 Bg7, I evaluate the position as roughly level. [UO]

Alekhine Defense - Welling Variation EB02 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.b3. The Welling Variation is based on avoiding an immediate confrontation in the center, choosing instead to play along the long diagonal. The plan is not especially unorthodox, but there are many possibilities for early queen excursion. 3...g6 is the best reply. 4.Bb2 Bg7 This position can arise from the ® Alekhine Defense or from the Nimzo - Larsen Attack via 1.b3 or 1.Nf3. 5.Qf3 is not at all unreasonable, since the queen is safe from any enemy attacks. 5.c4 Nb6 6.d4 d6 7.f4 0-0 [UO] ® Aljechin-Verteidigung - Welling-Variante B02

Alekhine, Alexander (1892-1946) E Winner of the first Soviet Championship (1920) and the only man to die while holding the world chess championship. He studied law at the Sorbonne but failed to get his doctorate as he claimed. He was sometimes called „Ale-and-Wine“ because of his drinking habits. He married four times to women 20 to 30 years older than he. One of his wives was dubbed „Philidor‘s Widow.“ He was a prisoner of war like all the other chess contestants at an international tournament in Mannheim in 1914. In 1915 and 1916 he served in the Russian Red Cross. In 1918 he was a criminal investigator in Moscow. In 1919 he was imprisoned in the death cell at Odessa as a spy. In 1920 he was back in Moscow intending to be a movie actor. He also served as interpreter to the Communist party and was appointed secretary to the Education Department. In 1921 he married a foreign Communist delegate and left Russia for good. At the Sorbonne his thesis dealt with the Chinese prison system. In 1930 he scored the first 100% score in the Chess Olympiad, winning 9 games on board 1 for France. During World War II, he became a Nazi collaborator and declared he was ready to sacrifice his life for a Nazi Russia. He competed in seven tournaments in Germany during the war and wrote several pro-Nazi articles. He died in Portugal after choking on an unchewed piece of meat. Prior to World War I, he spelt his name Aljechin. [CT]

Algebraic Notation E A system of recording the moves of a Chess game (first devised in the 9th century) in which each square on the board has a unique identifier, based on a grid system. From Whites side of the board, the files are letters from a to h moving from left to right and the ranks are numbered 1 to 8, moving from bottom to top. Piece moves are designated by a one-letter abbreviation for the piece followed by its destination square. Pawn moves are designated by the destination square alone. The first use of algebraic notation is from a French manuscript written in 1173. The first use of the figurine algebraic notation occurred in Belgium in 1927. Algebraic notation was introduced in CHESS LIFE in 1969. It wasn‘t until 1974 that the first book employing the algebraic notation was published by a major American publisher. Alice in fairyland Q & DICKINS, A. S. M. (21cm x 15cm, 24pp, stapled, white edge). A lecture given to the Lewis Carroll Society on 14.xi.75, originally published in „Jabberwocky“, Winter 1976. Privately published, Kew Gardens, 1976, copy 222 of 250. Presented to N. A. Macleod by the author, and given by Mrs Macleod. [BL]

In der Partieanfangsstellung stehen alle 32 Steine auf Brett A. [V. R. Parton, Fairy Chess Review 1953] (Urdefinition: nur Alice-spezifische Matts erlaubt: „On the e.p. question I think the capturer should only be allowed to capture on the square which has been moved over - in your example [WPb2-b4 with BPa4 on either board] b3 on board A, thus PAa4xb3 e.p.“ In Partien habe sich als sinnvoll erwiesen, den e.p.-Schlag zu streichen) [G. All Mate Chess nE Es gibt keine normalen Schlagfälle.
